Epoch Films Signs Emmy-nominated Director Adam Bernstein

Epoch Films is delighted to announce the signing of Emmy-nominated director Adam Bernstein. Having originally launched his career at Epoch working in the music video arena over a decade ago, Bernstein has since become one of the most sought-after directors working in episodic television today. While he continues to direct for television, he will now work with Epoch Films to bring his filmmaking acumen into the world of commercial advertising.

"I couldn't be more excited to return to Epoch and the world of commercials,” says Bernstein. “While I've had an amazing time in episodic TV, I've always missed 30-second spots - they can be incredibly entertaining and offer directors the opportunity to fully explore their craft."

Bernstein has hit the ground running, with his first round of Epoch-produced spots for the darkly comedic Allstate “Mayhem” campaign airing in early March 2015. Through his relationship with actor and Allstate spokesperson Dean Winters, Leo Burnett Chicago reached out to Bernstein about directing a new round of work for the campaign originally helmed by fellow Epoch director Phil Morrison.

SVP, Group Executive Producer Veronica Puc of Leo Burnett remarks on the collaboration, "From our first conversation with Adam, we felt that he had just the right combination of humor and mischief, with a healthy dose of darkness sprinkled in, for our latest round of Mayhem for Allstate. We really wanted to focus on the performance and the spirit of Mayhem, and the sensibility of Adam’s television work was a perfect fit. The fact that he and Dean have a great relationship was a plus, and definitely brought out the best of Mayhem.”

Bernstein is a prolific director, skilled at shooting comedy and drama - or a mix of both. His list of television credits reads like a veritable ‘must see’ lineup as the director behind multiple episodes of shows such as 30 Rock (which went on to earn the 2007 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series), Breaking Bad, Nurse Jackie, Masters of Sex, Scrubs, Alpha House, Strangers with Candy, Oz, and most recently, Better Call Saul. Bernstein’s pilot for FX’s hit crime story Fargo earned him a 2014 Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special.

Bernstein began his career as an animator before transitioning into music videos in the 90’s. During that time, Bernstein was given the chance to experiment with a variety of techniques and styles, directing over 70 promos which are now considered classics for the likes of the B-52’s, the Beastie Boys, and Sir Mix A Lot’s pop phenomenon “Baby Got Back.”

Bernstein now returns to his old stomping grounds at Epoch Films. There, he reunites with Founder Mindy Goldberg, along with Executive Producers Melissa Culligan and Youree Henley, who are thrilled to further extend the reach of Adam Bernstein’s directorial expertise.

“Adam Bernstein comes to the commercial advertising discipline with a fresh perspective, but also with years of accomplished directing experience,” says Goldberg. “Adam has been part of the current TV renaissance, so it’s exciting to have the opportunity to introduce him as a new talent to the area of advertising.”
