Crazy Peeple

Late last week Peeple, an app for, well, reviewing other people, took the internet by storm…for all the wrong reasons.

The app, which has been described as the ‘Yelp for people’, allows you to rate your friends, family colleagues and anyone else you know based on everything from their professionalism to how good they are at dating. There’s no opt out, either. If someone has your number, they can review and rate you out of 5 stars.

Although Peeple is only in beta, and despite co-founder Julia Cordray’s plans to make it a “100 per cent positive app”, you can probably imagine that its very existence garnered substantial criticism.

With such a controversial purpose at its heart, Peeple spread like wildfire across social media ultimately becoming a trending topic on Twitter. All over the world people were reviewing Peeple (an app for reviewing people). The reaction was overwhelmingly negative with severe criticism based on the obvious possibilities of defamation, online harassment and cyber bullying. The internet stood as one against this newcomer, demanding the founders rethink Peeple’s November launch.

For some critics however, this does not add up, perhaps because a people rating app has been tried (and failed) before. They simply cannot comprehend it and this has led to a number of speculative theories of an elaborate publicity stunt. Whatever Peeple’s intentions it has captured people’s attention. Questions remain as the app has now mysteriously disappeared from the web, adding further fuel to the fire of speculation. Hopefully all will be revealed in due course.
