For International Women’s History Month 2022, Honda wanted to focus on women in STEM careers—and more specifically to tackle the lack of representation of women in STEM. Women in STEM fields are highlighted less often than their male counterparts, and, subsequently, young girls don’t see female role models they can aspire to be like when growing up. This campaign aimed to fix that by inspiring the next generation of young girls with a social-first Q&A about a career in STEM. To do this, we highlighted Melanie Morimoto, a senior Honda fabrication modeler and third-generation upholsterer. With over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry, she is a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Working with the Honda CSR team, we pulled in questions from young girls at the PAST Foundation—a nonprofit organization that’s been a leader in designing innovative educational opportunities across the nation, bringing problem-based learning to educators and experiential programs to students. Five girls, ages 9–16, from diverse backgrounds submitted questions about STEM careers, and we had Melanie answer them with pearls of advice. Questions ranged from “How can girls be into STEM and not have to fight with boys?” to “What is the workplace like for you as an Asian woman?”
